"China weighs threat of 60 million obese citizens"

About China's citizens, not the upcoming Olympics hosting fat people.

Deputy Director of Food committee named "Pan" . . .

BEIJING (Reuters) - Newly rich China, where the wealth gap is expanding year by year, has more than double as many obese people as it has people living in abject poverty, Xinhua news agency said on Monday.

Changes in traditional diet, including a new fondness for Western fast food, and a sharp rise in the use of cars have been blamed for bulging waistlines in China, where famine and chronic malnutrition caused the deaths of millions in the 1950s.
"While 24 million people in China live in abject poverty and suffer malnutrition, 60 million Chinese are obese," Xinhua said, quoting Pan Beilei, deputy director with the State Food and Nutrition Consultant Committee.

"An increasing number of Chinese are eating more fat and junk food but less grains and vegetables, leading to a high number of cases of high blood pressure and diabetes," Pan was quoted as saying.

Statistics show that about 160 million Chinese suffer from high blood pressure and 20 million have diabetes.
"The widening wealth gap is also to blame for regional diet difference," Pan was quoted as saying. "Narrowing the regional income gap will help improve the diet of citizens in poverty-stricken areas and make them more healthy."

No Flea Zone ... "Fleeezy" ?

Sept. 16:
There they were every morning when I walked into my little office. . . . ...
They were like any other hungry baby animals, but smaller. . . . .... .. .
At first I tried denial, but the next day there more of them. . . . .. . . . .. .. .
The next day there were twice as many & different sizes. .. .. ... .. . ..... .. . . ........ ...
Some could really hop high & some became very fast at hopping.
Do not use the thumb & index finger, but just the index finger alone to "get" one.

One night when I had to go answer the phone, I was attacked by
2 or 3 big hungry fleas. That's when I realized I must come up with a plan.
At first I used water in a cup to drown the unfortunate trapped fleas.
Rubbing alcohol probably works better, but water doesn't smell bad if it spills.
Victory was limited. So I divised Plan-B
Hair spray. I tried it this morning. So far, No Fleas.
I'll give another report tomorrow...

Sept. 18: One Flea yesterday morning. One shot of Hair Spray ... No Flea.

Sept. 20: Ah-ha! One Flea in Bedroom. He got away briefly, but I think I got him. If not, he'll leave flea bites tonight.

Eeezy Does It

Yesterday, I watched an amazing live news story. Pilot Scott Burke did a perfect landing at Los Angeles International Airport. He apologized for landing 6" off center.

JetBlue Flight 292 took off from Burbank's Bob Hope Airport at 3:17 pm. It had a crew of six and 139 passengers. The passengers watched live satellite tv coverage of their own drama.

The front wheels were turned sideways, but the gear did not collapse. The Airbus 320 landed safely at 6:19 pm.

Sneeezy

Some of us have always had allergies. In the past three years, I have settled on products like Actifed or "Compare to Actifed" like Longs Cold & Allergy tablets. I used to find them at the local Grocery Outlet, a place to find cheeep groceries and other things.

That was before the product was misused and became an ingredient for illicit drugs. Now I have to go to the pharmacy section of Longs, hat in hand, and humbly request a package of 48 pills. Last week was my first experience in buying a pack.

(1) Wait in line.
(2) New person finally finds my requested item.
(3) Give new person coupon for 50-cents off Long's brand item.
(4) New person does not compute... He's used to bar codes & scanning.
(5) He gets "help" from other pharmacy employee.
(6) Item now costs $1.00 more than normal.
(7) New person calls store manager on the loud speaker.
(8) Manager arrives.
(9) Manager instructs New person to lift the phone & say "Thank You" over the loud speaker.
(10) Manager reaches over and corrects problem--from my side of the cash register.

Then I was allowed to take my 48 pills home legally. I'm sure glad I'm not using the pills to make illicit drugs--though I somewhat understand why some want illicit drugs!
